Lite Wheel FAQ's

This guide will walk you through the basics and answer a few common questions to help you feel more at home on the wheel.

Getting Started

To get started, you only need a few simple things:

  • Clay
  • A small bowl or cup of water
  • Basic pottery tools (optional)

Before your first session, a few tips can make things smoother:

  • Start with a small amount of clay (around 300–500g) for better control
  • Use a low to medium speed while you’re getting comfortable
  • Place your wheel on a stable, non-slip surface
  • Keep water levels low and empty the splash cup before it reaches the max line

That’s all you need to begin, everything else comes with practice.

A plastic batt is a flat disc that sits on top of your wheel. It’s completely optional, and you can also throw directly onto the wheel head.

Using a batt can make it easier to remove your piece from the wheel without touching the shape. It also means you can make a few pieces in one session with less mess.

You can leave your clay to dry overnight on the batt, and once it’s firm, it should lift away easily.

Place the batt onto the clean metal wheel head so it sits flat and centred. Press down gently and check it feels secure before adding clay.

To remove it, lift from one edge using your fingers or a tool if needed, then set it aside to dry. Before starting again, make sure your surface is clean and ready.

You can use any type of clay with the Lite.

If you don’t have access to a kiln, air-drying clay is a great place to start. For kiln-fired clay, porcelain is a nice option for its soft, smooth feel.

When starting out, use around 300 - 500g of clay for better control. As you get more comfortable, you can gradually increase this up to around 1kg.

Begin at a low speed while centering your clay. As you settle in, you can gently increase the speed when shaping.

Slower speeds tend to give you more control, especially while learning.

Yes, most standard tools will work well with the Lite.

If you’re making smaller pieces, our Mini Ribs and Micro Ribs are designed to fit nicely with the scale of the wheel.

Using your wheel

This is completely normal, especially if you're a  beginner. Centering takes a bit of time to learn.

If you’d like a little extra guidance, our step by step centering guide can help you build confidence.

The Lite is a great place to start learning pottery.

It’s not suitable for children under 12. For ages 12 and up, adult supervision is recommended while using the wheel.

The Lite is designed for shorter throwing sessions rather than long continuous use.

If the wheel head starts to feel warm, pause and let it cool before continuing.

Set-up and portability

Yes, this is an option. The Lite wheel is compact and easy to move, making it a nice option for flexible setups at home or on the go.

You’ll need to purchase an external power bank to run the wheel. We’re putting together a blog post with ideas for portable setups and power options, coming soon!

A flat, stable surface will help keep your wheel steady and give you better control while throwing.

Accessories and tools

A Mini Trimmer compatible with the Lite is currently in development and coming soon!

We’re also working on an adapter so the Classic Wheel Mini Trimmer can be used with both wheels.

Most of our pottery tools are compatible with the Lite, along with the Plastic Batts (beta).

Please note that the current Mini Trimmer and four extra batts set are only compatible with the Classic Wheel (our previous discontinued wheel).

Care and maintenance

After each session, wipe the wheel with a damp sponge or cloth to remove all clay.

Do not submerge the wheel in water, and keep moisture away from electrical parts.

The Lite is designed to handle water during normal use, but a little care goes a long way.

If the splash cup gets close to the max line, empty it before continuing. Avoid submerging the wheel when cleaning.

With regular cleaning and care, your wheel should stay in good working condition.

Before each session, it’s a good idea to check the cable and make sure everything feels as it should.

Troubleshooting

Check that the power cable is securely connected, the switch is on, and the speed dial is turned up fully.
